Former Prime Minister Tony Abbott says “it’s a great honour” to be awarded the Companion of the Order of Australia, one of the nation’s highest honours. Mr Abbott said “he was pleased to be able to serve in many different capacities” throughout his time in public service. Governor-General David Hurley said it was an honour Australians should take pride in because it is “driven by nominations by the people - people in your community saying that person is doing an excellent job.”
