AMA President Dr Omar Khorshid says the government has to “take a bit of a punt” on the percentage of the population it believes should be vaccinated before reopening international borders. “We’re going to have to take a bit of a punt here,” he said. “They’re going to have to make a call as to what they expect to be on the balance of probabilities, the number of Australians needed to be vaccinated in order to largely protect our population. “In particular the focus has to be on those vulnerable Australians who we know have a much higher chance of ending up in hospital. “If our vaccination rate amongst young healthy people is lower, we may be able to live with that”. Dr Khorshid told Sky News the government also needs to decide what should to be done to help hospitals deal with the small number of COVID cases which will come in once the international borders are opened.
