US President Joe Biden has to be firm with Russia and use a carrot and stick approach when he meets with President Vladimir Putin later this month in Geneva, according to Cypress College Political Science Professor Peter Mathews. “It’s a big story because they’re the two major countries in the world, as far as the status of military might and everything that they do effects each other and the world,” he said. Professor Mathews said “we’re going to have to see” if Mr Biden can be firm with Russia on the possible involvement in the cyber-attack on SolarWinds and economic attacks “for financial gain” being carried out by criminal gangs on companies which are crucial to the US economy. He told Sky News President Biden needs to offer Russia something besides the “negative punishment or the attitude toward ‘Russia has got to shape up or ship out’.” “The other thing he has to offer them is maybe going back to some of those arms control agreements that we had before that President Trump did not renew. “So it has to be carrot and a stick at the same time”.
